Just after noon, the Kent Fire Department received a report about a gas leak on campus at the recreation center. They responded to the scene promptly and students were asked to evacuate the building.
David Moore, captain of the fire department, said the report was for a smell of gas or burning in a lower-level storage room.
Moore said the facility activated the fire alarm and evacuated the building, which was the best option.
After checking the area, Moore said it seemed like sewer gas.
“That is very common when, maybe a drain that hasn’t been used in a long time, the trap dries up, and that allows gas to come up from the sewer,” he said.
Moore said the team confirmed that the building is safe and after being aired out, the building will be open again.
