The Kent State School of Music held a conductor workshop Feb. 25-27 in Ludwig Recital Hall to help music leaders and educators elevate their conducting skills. The program featured guest conductors who have years of experience directing ensembles.
This is the first time the school has held the workshop, according to Kent State Orchestra Director Isaac Terceros. Organizers said they are grateful to give musicians this opportunity.
“The important part about this is the experience. Not only do you just open the score at your home and conduct the air, but you conduct real human beings,” Terceros said.
Each day of the program, participants came together to focus on specific conducting skills under the direction of guest conductors. In the afternoon, the group put the lessons into practice by taking turns conducting the Kent State Orchestra.
In addition to the technical aspect of directing musicians, participants said they are learning how to network with each other and connect with people who share their interests while exploring their own strengths and weaknesses.
Kent Stater TV reporter Tatum Werntz has more on how these musicians are building confidence at the podium.
