FIRST: Einstein Bros. Bagels
Einstein Bros. Bagels at Kent State University has been recognized as the best on-campus dining location, securing first place in the annual “Best of Kent” competition. The popular bagel and coffee spot has long been a favorite among students and staff, offering fresh food, a welcoming atmosphere and excellent customer service that lives up to its reputation.
Diane Johnson, senior manager of the Student Center dining locations, expressed her pride in Einstein making the top three.

“It feels great; we’re very proud,” Johnson said. “Our students are proud to be here, our full-time staff is very proud to work here and we usually make the top three. Students love to eat here.”
A key reason for the restaurant’s success is the strong connection between the staff and the students. Johnson said the team makes an effort to create an environment that is both friendly and familiar for students.
“The students come in, and they’re very routine in what they order. They like one thing, and they’ll get that thing all the time,” she said. “Our staff gets to know them, and there’s another big interaction between students and the cashier, who talks to them every day.”
Beyond just serving food to students, Johnson said Einstein Bros. Bagels also ensures students feel supported and accommodated. They make sure everyone is taken care of in a fair and equal way so everyone can get what they need without any extra hassle.

Johnson said staff members often assist students in ways that go way beyond their dining needs.
“A lot of times, we’ll overhear students talking, and we try to help if we can,” she said. “We also help new students in the fall by answering questions about where to shop, how to get to different places or which bus lines to take.”
The welcoming environment is something students appreciate, including Cole Dockus, a junior aerospace engineering major. He praised the staff’s friendliness and the overall dining experience.
“The lady behind the counter is amazing — super personable,” Dockus said. “She actually seems like she cares about what you have to say and isn’t just doing her job. It’s super comfortable, and the food is good, too.”

Dockus also pointed out how well the dining area is organized, making it easy for students to get their food and drinks without hassle.
“The lines are decently organized, so it’s not just everybody standing around in a big huddle,” he said. “The number system is convenient because it’s the same everywhere on campus, so you’re not dealing with different ordering systems at different places.”
For Dockus, Einstein Bros. Bagels holds a special place beyond just being an on-campus dining location.
“Honestly, I’m a little biased because I had one in my hometown growing up,” he said. “When I came to Kent and saw they had one here, I was so excited. It’s not typical school food — it’s an actual franchise.”
SECOND: Rosie’s Diner and Market

Rosie’s Diner and Market, a staple of the Kent State community, has once again been recognized for its quality food and welcoming atmosphere, securing second place. The honor highlights the diner’s commitment to excellent service for students and locals alike.

Aubrey Poalson, senior manager at Rosie’s Diner and Market, expressed excitement over the achievement.
“It’s really exciting because this is my first year with Rosie’s Diner,” Poalson said. “This is something we were striving for all year — making sure that we were in the top three. I know we’ve been recognized before, so it was definitely a goal for all the managers and team here. It’s great to see that effort pay off.”
Rosie’s Diner has long been a go-to spot for students, offering a classic American menu with a comfortable environment. According to Poalson, a key part of the diner’s service comes from its focus on customer service.
“We really make sure that we have a guest-first attitude,” Poalson said. “Making sure that our customers feel taken care of is what we preach to our team members.”
THIRD: Eastway Dining

Eastway Dining has also been recognized as one of the top on-campus dining locations, securing third place. The achievement highlights the hard work of the dining hall’s staff and their commitment to providing students with a welcoming and high-quality dining experience.
Melania Beeman, senior sous chef at Eastway Dining, expressed pride in the accomplishment and credited those who contributed to their success.

“It feels really good,” Beeman said. “I have to give credit to all of my employees, the full-timers and the students as well.”
Beeman emphasized the importance of staff interactions with students to ensure they feel at home.
“Just talking to the students when they come in, making sure they know where everything is and answering any questions they have, especially about dietary restrictions, helps make this a safe and welcoming place for them,” Beeman said.

When it comes to delivering a great dining experience, Beeman said Eastway prioritizes three main aspects: “quality, presentation and just being helpful — having all your resources available.”
