After 35 seasons, the Kent State gymnastics team has a new head coach. Following the retirement of longtime head coach Brice Bigin, KSU Athletic Director Randale Richmond announced the hiring of Austyn Fobes on Friday.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to step into the role of head coach,” said Fobes. “I want to sincerely thank President Diacon and AD Randale L. Richmond for believing in my vision for this program and trusting me to carry forward the proud tradition of Kent State gymnastics. I’m also deeply appreciative of Brice Biggin for his guidance and for supporting me along the way. This is truly a dream come true, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
Fobes has served as an assistant coach for the Flashes since 2024 and is now the first woman and the third head coach overall in program history. With her on staff, gymnast Heidi Schultz was able to claim the Mid-American Conference event title on the beam under the guidance of Fobes.
“Brice Biggin set a standard over 35 years that few coaches in any sport can match, and finding the right person to carry that legacy forward was our most important priority,” said Richmond. “Austyn Fobes is exactly the right person. She came to Kent State with an impressive background, immediately made an impact on our student-athletes and program, and has earned this opportunity. We look forward to watching her continue the great tradition of Kent State gymnastics.”
Before coming to KSU, Fobes coached at Bowling Green and as a Level 6-10 coach at Premier Gymnastics in New Jersey. With the Falcons, Fobes coached Kathryn Weilbacher who went on to win the first floor exercise title in program history.
As a collegiate athlete, Fobes was team MVP in 2013 at New Hampshire and qualified for the NCAA regional in all four years.
This announcement follows Bryce Biggin’s decision to retire, who holds the record for most wins in program history with 465, as well as eight Mid-American Conference championships.
“Austyn was an elite gymnast who had a great college career at the University of New Hampshire and has been coaching at a high level since graduating,” Biggin said. “She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge and has been a really valuable addition for the last two years as an assistant with me.”
Biggin will remain as the head coach until June 1st, when Fobes will take over.
