Is “Project Hail Mary” the movie of the year?
This film is an adaptation of Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel, and it is now being called one of the greatest of all time, being compared to films like “Interstellar” and “E.T.”
Just how phenomenal is it?
This film follows a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace, taken on by Ryan Gosling. Ryland Grace is tasked with an important mission by the U.S. government: embark on a mission into outer space, prevent the sun from dying and save the world.
During the journey, he meets and names an alien, Rocky, voiced by James Ortiz. Together, they learn they are on the same mission and form an unlikely friendship that could save their worlds.
The story of this film was perfect. Not just because it’s a good Sci-Fi fantasy, but also because it’s a story about humanity and hope.
Warning: the pacing of the film starts off slow, which is understandable for narrative and build-up reasons, but the second and third acts will have you engaged.
The visuals of the film were beautiful and colorful. There is one specific shot in the film that made me fall in love with cinema again, and surely will make you infatuated with as well. I also adored how this film did not rely entirely on green screen, and even featured a lot of practical effects, such as the set design for the Hail Mary ship and the puppet used for Rocky.
As performances go, Ryan Gosling, unsurprisingly, was the standout, arguably giving the best performance of his career – as he plays both comedy and drama roles perfectly. As for Sandra Hüller, she did an amazing job playing Eva, especially when she sang the emotional Harry Styles’ single, “Sign Of The Times.” James Ortiz not only did a great job voicing Rocky but also worked the puppet used for him.
Overall score for this film: 10/10. “Project Hail Mary” is not only a sci-fi masterpiece, but an emotional story about hope, humanity and friendship – which we need now more than ever.
We need the belief that we can achieve the impossible – just as long as we believe in the Hail Mary.
