The Kent State lacrosse team lost a conference game against Robert Morris University by a score of 8-5 on Saturday. This makes their conference record 1-3 and overall record 6-6.
Saturday was Senior Day, as the senior players were recognized for their dedication to the team.
“I love the senior class,” coach Brianne Tierney said. “They are such great leaders, this whole group. They share their love of lacrosse, and they share their love of their team, with anybody who will listen. They’re all so grateful, and I think that goes a long way.”
The Flashes’ scoring was steady throughout the game, but not enough to beat the Robert Morris Colonials, who scored five in the first half, compared to KSU’s three.
Senior attacker Lizzie Lundeen opened the scoring about halfway through the first quarter, and a few minutes later senior midfielder Zayda Crumpton scored on the man-up to make the score 2-0. RMU scored with three minutes left in the first quarter to cut the Flashes’ lead in half.
44 seconds into the second quarter RMU tied it, and even took the lead less than a minute later. Later in the quarter when the Colonials doubled their lead, the Flashes gained possession when sophomore midfielder Katlyn Binnix won the draw control and junior attacker Morgan Halli scored. RMU added one more goal to make the score 5-3 Colonials going into the half.
In the first half KSU recorded seven ground balls, compared to RMU’s 10.
“We were creating offense,” Tierney said. We were getting opportunities to shoot, maybe just not finishing those shots, but we had a lot of good looks at the cage, and we did well on the draw, and caused a ton of turnovers.”
In the second half, the Flashes were outscored 3-2. They recorded seven groundballs, four draw controls and 17 shots on goal. Halli scored her second goal of the night, and senior attacker Riley Floyd scored KSU’s final goal.
