The Kent State University Library continues to serve as a central hub for students across campus, offering a wide range of spaces and resources tailored to different study needs. From quiet study rooms to collaborative workspaces, the library is designed to accommodate a variety of learning styles.
Kenneth Burhanna, dean of the Kent State library, said it provides “study spaces, gathering spaces, technology spaces, along with food and drink.”
A key strength of the library is its adaptability. Burhanna explained that the team actively considers student feedback when shaping the environment.
“Different students need different amenities and services to support focus and productivity,” she said. “We have a variety of options, plus we have a student advisory council. We listen to their voices for feedback and to identify new directions.”
Students also appreciate other specific features within the building. Soft seating and booth-style areas have become popular spots, while the Student Multimedia Studio offers unique resources such as free 3D printing, recording stations and podcasting booths.
For many, even the building itself, being the tallest building in Portage County, adds to the appeal. Its upper floors provide quiet study areas and bird’s-eye views of campus, creating a prime study environment.
Second Place: Scribbles
For students who prefer a more relaxed, cafe-style environment, Scribbles Coffee might be a better fit. The second place winner offers an alternative to traditional study spaces.
Its cozy atmosphere, paired with food and drink options, makes it a popular destination for both individual studying and casual group work.
Emma Morrow, a Kent resident, shared her long-standing appreciation for the shop.
“Scribbles has been my favorite local coffee shop for years now,” she said. “I’m a big fan of their shaken espresso drinks, and the selection is great.”
The combination of specialty drinks and menu items contributes to the shop’s appeal as a productive yet inviting place to spend time.
In addition to its menu, the layout and atmosphere encourage people to settle in for longer periods, whether they’re working on assignments, meeting with friends or taking a break between classes.
The steady flow of students and community members throughout the day reflects its role as both a social hub and a reliable study environment, helping it stand out as a favorite among those seeking a balance of comfort and productivity.
Third Place: Kent Free Library
In third place is the Kent Free Library, which provides another valuable option for those seeking a quiet, community-focused study environment.
Stacey Richardson, director of the library, said that the “library is a comfortable, welcoming space where students and community members can focus and feel supported.”
It offers a variety of study areas, including larger tables, meeting rooms equipped with whiteboards and more secluded spots for individual work.
One of the library’s standout features is its accessibility. Patrons benefit from free amenities such as parking, Wi-Fi, and computer access.
Additional services like printing and staff assistance also support students’ academic needs.
Richardson noted that being recognized reflects the library’s connection to the community.
“We’re so grateful to know that people value our space and see it as a meaningful part of their routines,” she said.
