The Flash’s Activity Board hosted a “Wicked” Watch Party in the Kent State University Museum’s Murphy Auditorium in celebration of the “Wicked” costumes on display at the museum from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 9.
FAB hosts on-campus events throughout the year for students to make friends and find community in college.
“I just love being able to bring joy to the student body,” said Ana Hasselbusch, FAB president and senior hospitality and event management major.
Before the movie began, students viewed the “Wicked” costumes on display at the museum, as it was the last day they would be on display.
Hasselbusch said they collaborated with the Kent State University Museum so they could encourage more people to see the costumes, while also being able to see “Wicked” for free.
Having these costumes provides students the opportunity to educate themselves about the fashion industry and helps students envision what their careers post-graduation might look like.
“I think it shows support to local designers and fashion enthusiasts because the designer’s from Akron, which is very close to here,” said Hannah Craig, a freshman marketing major.
Upon arrival, attendees were greeted at the door by members of FAB, who handed out tiaras, wands and stickers to enhance the movie-viewing experience. Students then took their seats in the Murphy Auditorium and could bond over what “Wicked” meant to them.
Craig discussed the inspiring message and themes within “Wicked.”
“I think it just shows from onstage and on-screen, womanhood and the power of that, and also acceptance and that difference isn’t bad,” she said. “I think, once again, unity, which is what FAB did by bringing everyone here.”
Sophomore theatre design/tech/production major Leah Roepke explained why the movie means so much to her.
“It means a lot to me because there’s so much diversity, and I grew up with theater. So to see it on a big screen means a lot,” she said.
Before watching the movie, FAB held a “Wicked” trivia Kahoot game and awarded winners with prizes. The first round of trivia was on the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz” movie, the second round covered the Broadway adaptation of “Wicked,” and the third round was on the movie version. The prizes were all “Wicked” themed and included the “Wicked” book set, Legos, coloring books and more.
Sophomore recreation park and tourism management major Cooper Pontis, serves as co-director of FAB’s game nights and specializes in trivia. Pontis enjoys hosting game nights and trivia as it allows him to see students make friends.
“I think it’s a really great way to bring people together,” he said.
Students enjoy the community atmosphere that FAB creates by hosting similar events.
“I think it’s important because it gets people out and doing stuff, meeting new people, making new friends and having experiences,” Pontis said.
For students interested in joining FAB, part-time worker applications will be released late November, and volunteer pool applications in January.
FAB will continue to bring community together as it hosts more events throughout the year. To keep up to date on FAB events, visit its Instagram page at @fab_ksu.
