The Kent State Men’s Club Lacrosse team headed to Kentucky to play the University of Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State University on Sunday. 

The Flashes lost to the University of Kentucky in the first game of the day 7-6 and won against Middle Tennessee State University 10-2 in game two. 

Kent State is now 5-3 in the National College Lacrosse League D2. 

“Going in it was going to be a battle,” president of the Kent State men’s club lacrosse team Brendan Sweeney said. “We were winning most of the game. And then Kentucky really capitalized towards the end and you know, pulled away with it.” 

Kentucky is currently ranked 10th in its league. Kentucky now stands 3-2, with its only losses coming from Ohio State Scarlet Club and Louisville club. 

“Their offense was really consistent with their passing and their ball movement, but really no standout players and nothing crazy,” sophomore defenseman Adam Varga said. “But defensively we had some penalties. That brought us down towards the end to some stupid penalties that we could have avoided. 

Middle Tennessee is currently not ranked. The Flashes beat Middle Tennessee by 8 goals.  

“A big part of the win was that they were really shorthanded,” said Sweeney. “They only had 10 guys show up. So, we took that as kind of an opportunity to get those young guys in. I even went and played on offense and I’m a defender. I got a goal too. That’s all that matters.” 

In the first game against Kentucky, senior Merrick Widdoes led the Flashes with 3 goals and 1 assist. Freshman Brock Taylor scored 2 goals and Mason Bilinovich also scored 2.  

In the second game against Middle Tennessee, Brock Taylor led the team with 4 goals. Nick Beck scored 2 goals and 2 assists. Alex Steen also scored 2 goals with 1 assist.  

The Flashes still await the playoff schedule. There is still a chance of the first game of playoffs being at home.  

On Sunday April 23rd the Men’s Club Lacrosse team will take on the Men’s Club Ice Hockey team in a game of lacrosse for fun at Dix Stadium at 4p.m.
