Townhall II celebrates 50 years serving Portage County

Local prevention, treatment and recovery center, Townhall II, is celebrating 50 years of service by holding a community celebration at the Hometown Bank Plaza in Kent Ohio. The event will take place on Oct. 1 from noon-6 p.m.

The free event is meant to be a day to bring local vendors and community members together, share stories and simply laugh.

“There will be a DJ, snacks, family-friendly games, fun prizes and so much opportunity for connection,” Townhall II CEO Tamera Hunter said. “Since COVID, we have unfortunately seen so many businesses shut down. This is the event to bring the businesses and the people of Kent together.”

Townhall II began as two grassroots efforts: a crisis hotline and a drop-in center, run by volunteers who wanted to provide education and immediate help to those struggling with drug abuse on Kent State’s campus.

In 1997, a merger with Portage County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services enhanced the existing programs and integrated both a DUI school and a halfway house for women facing abuse and addiction.

It has since expanded into an organization that provides education, prevention, intervention, advocacy and treatment programs for children, adolescents and adults struggling with addiction, substance abuse and violence in Portage County.

It also serves as the rape crisis center in the county where counseling, crime victim advocacy and child violence and sexual assault prevention services are offered.

“Townhall II is the community’s best friend it could ever have,” Hunter said. “One that would never give up on you, that’s there for the long haul. It provides services throughout your lifespan. Even when you feel better or move on, it is still there for you.”
