A racial slur was written on a mirror in the men’s bathroom on the first floor of the university library Tuesday. The incident was then reported to Kent State Police.

Chris Jenkins, assistant director of public safety and captain of Kent State Police, said the writing was easily removed from the mirror. No suspect has been identified yet.

The university sent an email Wednesday around 5 p.m. informing the Kent State community about the report, but the message did not include any specifics as to where or when the racial slur was found or when it may have occurred. The manner in which the slur was written was also undisclosed.

“Our university is committed to its core value of creating a community of kindness and respect,” the email said, “and the recent appearance of this symbol of hate tells us again of the work still ahead of us.”

The email also said Counseling and Psychological Services can be reached at 330-672-2487 by “students in need or individuals who are concerned about a student’s mental well-being.” Its hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
