Women’s golf wins 23rd consecutive Mid-American Conference title

Kent State’s women’s golf team kept its streak of consecutive Mid-American Conference titles alive as the team won its 23rd straight MAC title during the MAC Championships on April 22-24.

The MAC championship tournament took place at Stone Oak Country Club in Holland, Ohio and the teams had to battle through some windy conditions over the three day tournament.

The Flashes had a solid first round, carding an 8-above-par, 296 and sat in first place after Friday’s round one.

Senior Emily Price was the only Kent State golfer to shoot under par in the first round, carding a 2-under-par, 70 which put her in second place after round one.

Fifth year student Chloe Salort shot a 1-above-par, 73 in round one which put her in fourth place after the first round. Freshman Jennifer Gu carded a 4-above-par, 76 in the first round putting her in a tie for sixth place after round one. Junior Noramol Nuchsila shot a 5-above-par, 77 in round one which put her in a tie for 10th place after the first round.

Junior Mayka Hoogeboom carded a 9-above-par, 81 in the first round putting her in a tie for 22nd place after the first round.

KSU’s team score improved slightly in Saturday’s round two with the team shooting a 6-above-par, 294 to stay in first place after two rounds of action. The overall team score after round two was a 14-above-par, 590.

Price carded a 1-above-par, 73 in the second round to bring her overall total to a 1-under-par, 143 which kept her in second place after two rounds.

Salort shot an even-par, 72 in round two which brought her overall total to a 1-under-par, 145, jumping her up into third place after the first two rounds. Gu carded a 4-above-par, 76 in the second round to bring her overall total to an 8-above-par, 152 which dropped her into a tie for eighth place after two rounds.

Hoogeboom shot a significantly better second round with a 1-above-par, 73 which brought her overall total to a 10-above-par, 154 and moved her up into a tie for 12th place.

Nuchsila carded a 10-above-par in round two, 82 bringing her overall total to a 15-above-par, 159 dropping her unto a tie for 22nd place after Saturday’s second round.

The Flashes kept up the solid effort in Sunday’s third round, carding an 11-above-par, 299 to bring the team’s final total to a 25-above-par, 889 which secured the team the 2022 MAC Championship title.

Price had a tough ending to her tournament as she shot a 5-above-par, 77 in round three which brought her overall total to a 4-above-par, 220 and dropped her from a second place to a third place finish.

Salort played a solid third round carding a 2-above-par, 74 to bring her overall total to a 3-above-par, 219 and secured her a second place finish in the tournament.

Gu kept up the consistent effort by carding a 3-above-par, 79 which brought her overall total to an 11-above-par, 227 and secured her a tie for fifth place finish. Hoogeboom shot a 2-above-par, 74 to bring her overall total to a 12-above-par, 228 which secured her an eighth place finish.

Nuchsila carded a 4-above-par, 76 bringing her overall total to a 19-above-par, 235 and secured her a tie for 20th place finish.

Kent State  was the only school to have three athletes named to the 2022 MAC All-Tournament team with Salort, Price and Gu being named to the team.

Northern Illinois sophomore Jasmine Ly won the MAC Championship individual title after shooting a 1-under-par, 215 over the three day tournament.

Next, KSU will participate in the NCAA Regional Tournament at a yet to be determined location on May 9-11.
