In-person meetings return for QTPOC

The Queer and Transgender People of Color group is a safe space for those who did not have one before. For the first time since 2020, the group is having in-person meetings again.

COVID-19 impacted the group’s ability to function in a normal setting and their typical sense of community.

“I have seen more days where the center has been completely empty than full of students,” said Lo Denmon, assistant director of the LGBTQ Center. “It’s going to be hard to be back in a space like this. We have to recognize there is an entire class of students who got to Kent State in the middle of the pandemic and don’t know the resources exist at all.”

QTPOC aims to start conversations acknowledging individual experiences about discrimination and race while being a social club. The group also provides resources for inclusivity such as legally changing chosen names, housing options and mental health services.

“We really want more folks to participate in it, either they don’t feel like they can come to the center or they feel isolated … if this is the space they need.” Denmon said.

QTPOC is an exclusive group for only queer and trans people of color, but are always accepting new members. The QTPOC meetings will continue bi-weekly in the LGBTQ Center room 024 of the student center from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
