Senior Colin McCracken attempts to pin a Cleveland State University wrestler during the meet on Jan. 27, 2022 in Kent, OH. Kent State beat Cleveland State 27-9.

The Kent State wrestling team will be traveling to Athens, Ohio on Friday for the Mid-American Conference championships.

The Flashes will be led by fifth-year Jake Ferri and senior Colin McCracken.

McCracken has now won seven straight dual meets. He has no plan of slowing down this weekend, and he is looking to continue his win streak of seven.

“I’m excited to compete in my last MAC tournament ever,” McCracken said. “I want to put my best ability forward on the mat and ultimately qualify for the national tournament. Anything is possible, so why not make a great run to end my career.”

McCracken has had a strong career at Kent State and wants nothing more than to finish it with a MAC title.

“One of these could be my last matches ever,” McCracken said. “We had a super intense previous week of practice, and this week is more training for our mental strength going into the tournament.”

Coach Jim Andrassy is very proud of the wrestler McCracken has become and wants to continue his dominance.

“Colin has worked as hard as anyone,” Andrassy said. “He’s deserving of this moment and has been working super hard for it. Nobody cares about records anymore, it’s all about one match now, and Colin knows that.”

Ferri also could be seeing his Kent State career come to an end. He can either choose to be a sixth year or walk away from the sport for good.

“I’m gonna be myself and punch everyone in the mouth and not let up,” Ferri said. “I’m peaking at the right time, and I’m laser-focused for this tournament. Not everyone gets the chance to win a MAC championship, so I’m very excited for the opportunity.”

Ferri has his sight on a successful weekend.

“Winning the MAC title is what I’m looking forward to and excited about,” Ferri said. “Nothing else matters.”

Coach Andrassy has been very pleased with Ferri and agrees he’s back to wrestling strong.

“These past few weeks Jake arguably is wrestling the best he has in his career,” Andrassy said. “Jake can wrestle with anyone in the country, and he has a lot going for him right now. I think all of our guys can make a run, but I can’t wait to see Jake compete.”

This could be McCracken and Ferri’s last collegiate wrestling match ever. Both understand what’s on the table and can’t wait for opportunity.

Kent State looks to finish the season on the right note heading into the MAC wrestling championships March 4-5.
