Two or More, a new multiracial student group at Kent State, allows members a place to go where they don’t have to choose between their identities. 

The organization welcomes Kent State students who are of two or more racial backgrounds. The group strives to “embrace and uplift all multiracial students,” Two or More president Lydia Sherman said. 

Kasey Johnson, graphic designer for Two or More, described the organization as a place that allows her to celebrate both of her identities at the same time.

“We wanted to create a safe space for any identity that feels like they don’t have one,” Sherman said.

The group was created because members of the executive board felt there was a need for an organization for multiracial students at Kent State.

“It’s important because everybody should have a place where they can feel like they belong, where they can voice their opinion,” said Jordan Finley, marketing chair for the group.

Tyler Wallace, a student at the University of Akron, was invited to the event by Sherman, who is a friend of hers. Though she doesn’t attend Kent State, she felt the group created a sense of unity and community.

Sherman works at University Hospitals and coordinated with the health center to make cards for patients during Thursday’s event. They will be distributed on lunch trays for the holiday.

The group also had small pots available for attendees to decorate and plant seeds in to take home. 

The organization just started hosting events this semester, this being the second ever. The group meets every other Thursday in the Student Multicultural Center.
