Zeta Phi Beta event raises money for tsumani victims by song

He had the moves, the clothes, even the signature platinum and diamond “U” chain, but something was missing — it was the abs.

“I tried my best, but getting abs like Usher isn’t the easiest thing,” said Alonzo Clark, senior Pan-African studies major.

Clark played the role of Usher in last night’s Celebrity Look-a-Like and Lip Sync contest, sponsored by Zeta Phi Beta sorority.

All proceeds from ticket sales and donations were donated to the Red Cross, specifically to the Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund.

Usher wasn’t the only celebrity that graced the Student Center Ballroom’s stage: Destiny’s Child performed — twice.

Two different groups performed Destiny’s Child songs, the second group portraying the popular threesome of Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle took home the big prize.

Performing a meticulous dance number to the song “Lose my Breath” the girls, Kent State students Lindsay Fields, Brooke Bunch and Ashley Mays evoked a standing ovation from the crowd and a first place victory.

“We’ve been preparing for this for almost two weeks,” Fields said. “I had a lot of fun performing. All I wanted was for the crowd to enjoy our performance, and I think they did.”

Fields, Bunch and friend Ashley Merril opened the evening as they sang “Lift Every Voice,” the black national anthem.

“This is the first time we’ve ever held a talent contest like this,” said Patrice Deleon, member of Zeta Phi Beta. “All of the acts put in a lot of time and hard work, I think it really paid off for them.”

The evening contained other student performances including an imitation of Aaliya’s “Try Again” video and J.Lo’s “Get Right” video featuring Fabulous and a guest appearance from Clark, as Usher.
