Gymnastics squad flies into new season

The Kent State gymnastics team started off its 2006 season by showcasing the squad with the annual Blue and Gold Intrasquad meet.
The Blue squad squeaked by the Gold with a 114.775 score. The Gold team posted a score of 113.825.
Senior tri-captain Carrie Mayle led the Gold team, taking home first place finishes on the vault and the beam, as well as notching the top score in the all-around competition.
Mayle inked a 9.675 on the vault, barely edging out the Gold team’s freshman Stacey Kalberg who posted a 9.650. Mayle placed first on the beam, scoring a 9.675.
She also took home the all-around crown with a 38.475 overall, followed by junior tri-captain Shawntelle Thompson. Thompson led the Blue team with a 38.075 overall score.
Sophomore tri-captain Kristin Peters took the No. 1 place on the uneven bars for the Blue squad with a score of 9.750. Following Peters were Thompson and junior Julie Huynh who tied for second with scores of 9.625 for the Gold team.
Placing first on the floor exercise was junior Amy Cucinotta of the Gold squad, who scored a 9.800. Mayle was in the No. 2 spot on the floor with a 9.725.
The 2005 Mid-American Conference Champion Flashes will start the regular season at the All-Ohio meet at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14 in Columbus.
