Kent State’s field hockey team recorded its first win of the season yesterday when the team beat Colgate 3-2. The win snapped Kent State’s losing streak at five.
“It felt really good to get that first win,” coach Kathleen Schanne said.
Kent State (1-5) came out and took the role of the aggressors early. Kent State got off 12 shots before Colgate (1-4) managed their first.
Sophomore forward Natalie Barrett struck first for Kent State when she scored on a fast break. Senior forward Kate Perry got credit for the assist.
Perry would continue to stay active when she scored off of a deflection. Perry currently leads the Mid-American Conference with four goals.
“Elizabeth Lahey shot it, and I just put my stick out there and it went in,” Perry said. “A goal’s a goal. I’ll take it.”
Senior forward Elizabeth Lahey closed the half with her first goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Bernthal assisted on the score.
Kent State finished the half with 18 shots and four penalty corners. Colgate was held to seven shots and one penalty corner.
“Our passing was on,” Schanne said. “We were transferring the ball well. The team ran with each other and we really had a high-pressure defense. The first 20 minutes was beautiful.”
The Flashes picked up right where they left off in the second half. They attacked the Raiders’ net with three shots in 30 seconds. The Raiders, however, managed to fend off the onslaught and in the process they stole the momentum.
The Colgate comeback was led by sophomore forward Lauren Carey. Carey scored two goals in 67 seconds, making the score 3-2. However, the comeback fell short when Colgate failed to convert on a final penalty corner.
“We really came out hard in the first 10 minutes,” Schanne said. “The last five minutes of the game is what got us. Our footwork kind of went down hill and Colgate made adjustments that we failed to adjust to.”
Kent State will host No. 2 Wake Forest 3 p.m. Friday at Murphy Mellis field.
