Flashes start slow but pull off a 71-53 win at CMU

Four players scored in double figures as the Kent State women’s basketball team rebounded from an ugly loss against Eastern Michigan to easily defeat Central Michigan 71-53 on Tuesday.

The win at Central Michigan, Kent State’s first there since 2001, was a complete 180 from Saturday’s loss.

While the Flashes (9-9, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) wilted in key stretches on Saturday, they stood their ground against the Chippewas (9-11,1-6 MAC).

For most of the opening minutes of play, it looked as if Kent State was in for another tough night. Kent State started out shooting just 3-of-10 from the field and committed seven turnovers in the early goings.

However, with the score tied at 18 late in the first half, the Flashes came around to finish on a 15-3 run, highlighted by freshman guard, and Saginaw, Mich., native, Jamilah Humes’ last-second steal and 3-pointer.

Senior forwards Mallorie Griffith and La’Kia Stewart led the first half surge with eight points and four rebounds each.

Stewart finished the game with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Griffith ended the night with a season-high 14 points.

Also unlike the previous game, Kent State was able to finish off its opponent. A 14-6 run that ate up seven minutes of clock left little chance for a Central Michigan comeback. Kent State led by no less than 15 points for the entire second half.

One constant for the Flashes continued to be their defense. The Chippewas shot just 35.3 percent from the field and were forced into committing 25 turnovers, which the Flashes converted into 21 points.

Central Michigan senior forward Ann Skufca, who was averaging 14 points per game in MAC play, was held scoreless.

Kent State will next play 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Toledo (7-11, 3-3 MAC).
