Mass communication honors society gains new members

The seventh oldest college honor society inducted 20 members into its Kent State chapter March 15.

Kappa Tau Alpha is a national collegiate honor society for journalism and mass communication majors. Membership in the society is by invitation only. To be eligible, students have to be juniors or seniors in the top 10 percent of their class based on GPA.

“These students are actually more like the top 7 to 8 percent of their class,” said Jeff Fruit, director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. “It’s a really bright group.”

The Kent chapter of KTA doesn’t have many activities right now, but that could change.

“We would like to do something that encourages excellence,” Fruit said. “Maybe give an award about outstanding undergraduate research or sponsor some lectures.

“I got in (KTA) while I was in graduate school. It’s one of those things that creates a bond and can give you a leg-up.”
