Music, laughter and ball gowns filled the Student Center Saturday night as members of Circle K hosted its second annual Mardi Gras ball.
The organization raised more than $500 through tickets and raffles sponsored by 15 local stores in Kent. All proceeds will go toward the Biloxi alternative spring break program, which takes hundreds of volunteers to help reconstruct areas of Mississippi affected by Hurricane Katrina.
“We wanted to do something fun while helping a good cause,” said Circle K President Amy Basista, sophomore psychology major. “When else can we dress up? We don’t have prom anymore.”
Band K-uger helped students rock out for the cause as the night went on.
“We’re glad to play at an event that helps something like Biloxi and not just for our own profit,” said drummer Kevin Six, senior secondary education major.
Partygoers kept with the Mardi Gras theme, wearing masks, beads and formal attire to celebrate the lively dance.
Circle K, a college service organization sponsored by Kiwanis, meets at 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Room 304 of the Student Center.
