Relay for Life to be held Saturday
The fifth-annual Kent State Relay For Life, “Fighting Cancer 365,” kicks off this weekend with a balloon launch, survivor lap and opening ceremonies, honoring more than 50 local cancer survivors.
The 24-hour walking event begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow and ends 10 a.m. Sunday. It will be held on the track behind the DeWeese Health Center.
The weekend will include local bands, a talent competition, the Miss Relay Pageant drag show, sports activities and on-site fundraisers. A luminary service will be held at 11 p.m. to honor and remember cancer patients.
According to the Relay committee, Kent State began Relay For Life in 2003 with 27 teams who raised about $15,000. Last year, the event hosted more than 60 teams that raised more than $79,000. This year’s goal is to involve 70 teams and raise more than $100,000.
Relay For Life is a national event that raises funds for the American Cancer Society to support cancer research.
