The Kent State men’s golf team left North Carolina with a 10th-place finish at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate tournament this weekend.

“We played two good rounds and one mediocre round,” coach Herb Page said. “The second round in the afternoon was our nemesis.”

Kent State shot a 19-over-par 883. The University of Charlotte won the 15-team event, shooting a 12-under-par 852.

“This was another great field,” Page said. “It shows how deep college golf is.”

The team started off well, shooting a 289, which was good for a seventh-place tie after round one.

But they added 10 strokes in round two, shooting a 299, and in round three, they shot a 295.

“It’s frustrating,” Page said. “Individually we had some good rounds, but we couldn’t translate it into a good team score.”

Senior Marc Bourgeois was the top performer for the Flashes. He was 2-over-par for the tournament and tied for 20th.

“The first two rounds were not good,” Bourgeois said. “I made a few mistakes, but I felt I played good on the last day. . I have been hitting the ball a lot better.”

Bourgeois was tied for 35th after the first two rounds, but his day-three round of 71 – 1-under-par – moved him into 20th place.

Sophomore Peter Ahn also had a good tournament. Ahn shot 3-over-par and tied for 26th. Ahn and junior Tommy Wiegand had the Flashes’ best individual rounds, 2-under-par 70.

Junior Tom Ballinger shot 7-over-par for the tournament, but he was 2-under-par on par 3s – the third lowest par 3 average for the tournament.
