Do you fondue?

If you think fondue can only pair with polyester leisure suits and avocado colored cookware, then think again.

Chefs at The Melting Pot restaurant in Legacy Village have rediscovered this retro cooking style and have made preparing your own food elegant and fun.

When ordering, go with the Big Night Out, which features a four-course fondue dinner for two — and is the best way to taste their menu. You pick a cheese fondue, a salad, an entrée and cooking style, and lastly your chocolate fondue. Don’t worry, if you’re interested in this special and you’re alone, you can have a half order. Just remember, with this special the dessert fondue comes separately.

For your entrée, select from three categories: Fondue Feast, which has everything from filet mignon, a sweet balsamic marinated sirloin, white shrimp, wild mushroom stuffed ravioli, citrus pork and garlic chicken for $80 per couple; Fondue Fusion, which has everything from Fondue Feast but also a lobster tail for $84; and the Lobster Indulgence with two lobster tails, shrimp, sirloin, chicken, pork, ravioli and vegetables for $88.

I had the Cheddar Cheese fondue and I wasn’t wowed. I was told later that it was more for kids, as it is mild. If I could choose again, I think I would go for the Wisconsin Trio fondue. It’s a bit more experimental with fontina, butterkase and buttermilk bleu cheeses with white wine, scallions and sherry.

I chose Coq au Vin for my entrée to be cooked in. It had fresh herbs, mushrooms, garlic, spices and burgundy wine. It was a nice alternative to an oil based liquid, I thought, because it made me feel like I was using fewer calories — plus, it added a nice fresh taste to my Fondue Feast dinner.

The entrée was especially nice: All of the meats were extremely tender and very well seasoned. Really, nothing is better than skewering your pre-cubed meats and talking while it cooks.

And to the best part of the meal: dessert! When our server brought out our Chocolate S’mores and Flaming Turtle fondues, my mouth watered. The dippers alone are worth waiting for. They bring out fresh strawberries, bananas, cheesecake, chocolate and marshmallows, pound cake and brownies. Mmmmmm.

There’s nothing like an end to your night with a flambéed fondue with good friends, family or a special someone.
