Registration ends today for rec center’s climbing competition

The Outdoor Adventure Center will host the eighth annual ABS Bouldering Competition from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on tomorrow at the climbing wall in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

“We have people coming from all over Ohio and outside Ohio,” said Dave Herpy, the outdoor and camp coordinator for the rec center. “We are one of three host locations in Ohio, which is part of a national circuit.”

The competition is open to all ages and levels from beginner to advanced. Each competitor can choose how many problems he wants to complete as well as the level of the problem. All competitors will compete at the same time and can watch their competition.

Points are awarded based on skill level and how many attempts the competitor needs to complete the obstacle. Points are only awarded for an unaided, completed obstacle, and the first attempt will receive the most points.

There will be a trophy for the top male and top female in each category. Each competitor will receive an earth-toned T-shirt and a goody bag.

“We encourage people to come out and watch,” Herpy said. “There are some really good climbers.”

Spectators must pay a small entrance fee and will have an opportunity to win prizes. Door prizes, donated from national sponsors and local outfitters, will be raffled off during the competition.

Sheet pizzas from Guy’s Pizza and subs from Subway will be provided.

Pre-registration is required and registration ends today. The cost for students and members is $20 and $30 for nonmembers. To register, contact Herpy at (330) 672-2803.
