The Kent State chapter of Amnesty International will protest United States-operated military prison in Guantanamo Bay at several locations around campus today.

Protests will take place at 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. and at 6 p.m. in Risman Plaza, in front of the MAC Center and other locations. Some protesters will be wearing orange jumpsuits and demonstrating torture positions administered on prisoners held at Guantanamo.

Amnesty International hopes to educate students about Guantanamo Bay.

“We’re just trying to raise awareness,” Amnesty International member Michelle Luscre said. “We are just hoping people know that it’s an election year, and people can do something.”

Luscre said the group will be providing students with literature on Guantanamo Bay and the Amnesty International organization as well as a petition that will be sent to President Bush.

“Students should know that this is going on,” Luscre said. “Their rights are being denied. We are holding people there without charging them. There has only ever been one prisoner held in Guantanamo who has actually been charged with something.”
