Kent offers outdoor movie

Standing Rock Cultural Arts will be showing the classic Indiana Jones film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at 9 p.m. today, outdoors in the Home Savings Plaza in downtown Kent.

To close out the fifth year of its Downtown Innovative Community Event program, Standing Rock will be showing the film for free on a 20-by-20-foot Blimpscreen at the intersection of Water and Main streets.

In the event of rain, the film will be shown at the Kent Stage at the same time.

Jeff Ingram, executive director for Standing Rock, a non-profit art and educational organization based downtown, said he wants to encourage people, especially students, to experience downtown.

“We want to welcome the student population to downtown Kent,” Ingram said. “It’s a unique place.”

The event, called Sidewalk Cinema, is one of seven events Standing Rock has put on for each of the last five years as part of the D.I.C.E. program. This will be the third Sidewalk Cinema event.

Several downtown businesses and local foundations help sponsor the D.I.C.E. program, and The Henry V. and Frances W. Christenson Foundation provided the grant that brought in the Blimpscreen for the event.

Ingram said the project is a way for businesses to work together to draw people downtown.

Standing Rock will be holding one more event as part of the D.I.C.E. program this year. The Cider Festival, scheduled for Nov. 1, will have apples and cider provided by local orchards. All D.I.C.E. events are free and are held in the Home Savings Plaza.
