Whether it’s true, the art and science of astrology dates back to ancient Persia, physics professor James Gleeson said.

Gleeson said the basis of the zodiac comes from the way the sun moves among the various constellations during certain times of the year.

“In February, the sun is in front of the constellation Pisces,” Gleeson said.

From this, he said someone made a chart assigning the various signs to certain periods of the month.

In spite of the basis in astronomy, Gleeson does not hold a lot of truth to the predictions of the zodiac.

“I don’t think there is any scientific basis for it,” he said. “You don’t meet people with the same birthday and year as you whose lives are unfolding in the same way.”

Yet some people find that the traits of their specific sign match their own.

“That’s me,” said freshman exploratory major Rachel Hope when she heard the characteristics of an Virgo. “I can relate to each one on a different day, depending how the day goes.”

Hope said she reads her horoscope when she picks up the paper, and usually it matches her particular feelings for the day.

Tony Harrold, junior flight technology major, also agreed with the traits of his sign, Aquarius.

“I’m friendly, and I’m an honest person,” he said.” I’d like to say I’m unpredictable. I like to keep people on their toes a bit.”

Regardless of its accuracy, as Gleeson said, astrology is ancient. With that kind of history, it is unlikely its popularity will wane.
