The Kent State baseball team continued its perfect start to the season after traveling to South Carolina for the Coca-Cola Classic over the weekend.

Both Saturday’s 5 p.m. game and yesterday’s 1 p.m. game were canceled, but it was still a satisfying weekend for the Flashes.

Kent State (5-0) won both games of a doubleheader Friday, defeating Wagner 11-0 and Winthrop 9-6, with the help of some quality offense.

Winthrop entered its game against Kent State with a 6-0 record, but the Flashes’ bats were too much for the Eagles to handle.

Freshman catcher David Lyon hit a two-out triple to knock in three runs and scored on an error in the second inning.

Senior right fielder Jason Patton continued his success this season in the next inning, hitting a two-out, two-run homer over the right field wall. The home run was his second of the season.

Kent State manager Scott Stricklin has been very pleased with Patton’s play this season.

“So far, he’s really swung the bat well,” Stricklin said. “He’s been the guy that’s kept us going; he’s been the most consistent.”

Patton said he hasn’t let expectations get in his way this season. The senior is batting .476 with two home runs in Kent State’s five games this season.

“I just want to play hard and have fun,” Patton said. “Relaxing has been the biggest thing for me.”

Patton said he has narrowed his stance at the plate, which has also contributed to his improved hitting.

The baseball team easily won the earlier game of its doubleheader Friday, defeating Wagner 11-0.

Senior first baseman Greg Rohan hit a two-run home run in the fifth, and sophomore Kyle Hallock pitched six scoreless innings in the victory.

“I know we can get better … and that’s the exciting thing,” Stricklin said.

The team will look to continue its undefeated season at the UNCW Seahawk Round Robin this weekend in Wilmington, N.C. The Flashes’ first game will start at 1 p.m. Friday against Wright State.
