DIY fall treat recipes

Now that fall is here, instead of busting out the hot chocolate and candy apples, try these recipes. You can make these delicious fall treats right in your dorm room. Whether you indulge in them on your own or make them for someone special, these tasty snacks can be fun and easy. The best part is you don’t need to use an oven to make any of them.

Crunchy Apple-Maple Parfaits

What you need:

1 15-oz can apples with cinnamon, drained and diced

1/4 cup pure maple syrup

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup mashed Nature Valley Oats and Honey bars

1/3 cup pecans, chopped

1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt

What to do:

1. Toss diced apples, maple syrup and cinnamon together in a bowl.

2. In another bowl, toss granola and pecans.

3. Place 1/4 of the apple mixture into a cup.

4. Spread with 1/4 of the granola mixture and top with 1/4 cup yogurt.

5. Repeat the layers. Drizzle syrup on every third layer.

Makes two servings

Buckeyes

What you need:

1 1/2 cups peanut butter

6 cups confectioners’ sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

6 whole graham crackers crushed into crumbs (optional)

4 cups semisweet chocolate chips

What to do:

1. Using a spoon, mix peanut butter, sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and graham crackers in a large bowl.

2. Roll dough into one-inch balls. Place them on waxed paper and insert a toothpick into each ball. Put them in the freezer for 30 minutes or until they’re hard.

3. Melt chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl in the microwave for one minute. Stir until smooth. Using the toothpicks, dip the balls into the chocolate, leaving a small circle at the top uncovered. Place them back on the cookie sheet and refrigerate for 30-45 minutes or until chocolate is set. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

This recipe makes about seven dozen buckeyes.

Smore’s Pie

What you need:

1 graham cracker pie crust

1 jar of marshmallow fluff

4 chocolate pudding cups

Whipped topping (optional)

Makes six servings

What to do:

Spread marshmallow fluff in pie crust. Spread chocolate pudding on top of marshmallow layer and refrigerate. You may add whipped topping to garnish the top of the pie.

Puppy Chow

What you need:

9 cups of corn Chex mix cereal

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

« cup peanut butter

¬ cup butter or margarine

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 « cups powdered sugar

What to do:

1. Measure cereal in a separate bowl and set it aside.

2. In a microwaveable bowl, microwave the chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter on high for one minute.

3. Remove, stir it, then microwave for another 30 seconds or until it’s smooth.

4. Stir in vanilla.

5. Pour mixture over cereal and stir.

6. Pour mixture into a large food-storage plastic bag and add powdered sugar.

7. Seal bag and shake until contents are thoroughly mixed, then spread on waxed paper to cool.

8. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
