6 Reasons Not to Finish That Pesky Math Homework

So far my columns have all been serious, so I thought it was just about time to inject a little silly into your day.

First, let me start with a question: What does the average college student do more than anything else? I’ll give you a few guesses. It’s definitely not sleeping or studying. And while devouring pizza may come in a close second, I would have to say that most of our college lives consist of nothing more than wasting time.

And where better to waste precious hours of our young lives than our beloved Internet? In honor of this, I have compiled a list of my favorite online time wasters, in no particular order, and why you should love them too.

1. The Daily Wh.at (thedailywh.at): This blog is full of hilarious links from all over the Internet, most of which will probably have you peeing your pants within seconds. From funny videos to ridiculously sweet T-shirt ideas, there is no shortage of time-wasting bliss to be had.

2. Smosh.com: You have probably seen this two-man YouTube sensation’s famous Pokemon and Mortal Kombat theme song videos from so many years ago. But if you haven’t caught any of their other videos, this is the best place to check them out. Among my favorites: Boxman, Food Battles, EDITOR and the Firetruck Rap. Plus, added bonus for the site — you can literally spend hours in the Smosh Pit looking at ridiculous pictures and lists, such as Taturday (ridiculous tattoos) and 23 Clever Ways to Wear Duct Tape.

3. 11points.com: This blog consists entirely of hilarious Top 11 lists. According to the blog’s author, “Top 10 lists are for cowards.” Some good choices from this site: “11 Most Painfully Obvious Newspaper Articles Ever,” “11 Most Profound Quotes in Simpsons History,” “11 Yearbook Photos That Actors Wish We’d Never Seen.”

4. XKCD (xkcd.com): This is one of my favorite web comics. Especially if you are not up-to-date with the series, you can waste a good afternoon, evening and even some early morning hours on this site. The humor may not appeal to everyone because they do make a lot of geeky math jokes. But be sure to read the mouse-over text when you visit – sometimes that’s the best part.

5. Cyanide & Happiness (explosm.net/comics): Though not for everyone, as they sometimes have a crude sense of humor, these are some of the funniest web comics I have ever read. I have definitely wasted a good portion of my life on this site.

6. The many offshoots of icanhascheezburger.com: Born from an Internet meme, this site has blossomed into much more than cute cat photos with horrendously misspelled captions. A few of their blogs I would recommend: Graphjam, Totally Looks Like, Roflrazzi and My Food Looks Funny.

I’ve also gotten quite a few suggestions from friends. Among them:

eBaumsworld.com, goaheadvent.com, FMyLife.com, IMDb.com, IGN.com, MyLifeIsAvergage.com, and let’s not forget about YouTube, one of the original Internet time wasters.

So please, take my advice, and waste your time well.
