New off-campus housing may be built
A vacant field next to Dartmouth Place Apartments may be home to new apartments if a Columbus company gets the thumbs up from the City of Kent Planning Commission.
Edwards Communities has proposed to buy the property for student housing, but the area needs to be rezoned for specific standards. Kent Development Engineer Jennifer Barone said she typically handles these types of projects.
“They’re requesting that the R3 be changed to the university district,” Barone said.
An R3 zoning area is considered a high density residential area.
Barone said the company searches for campuses in need of student housing.?
“They look for something they’re interested in,” she said.
Edwards Communities was unable to be reached for comment. The company has apartments in Perrysburg, Toledo and central Ohio, with five locations at Tuttle Crossing.
The planning commission will meet tonight to discuss the proposal.
