Starting five for Kent State’s women’s basketball
Stephanie Gibson
Senior guard
After a career season in 2008, Gibson fell off the map last year, averaging just 2.5 points a game while playing 15.5 minutes a game. If she can return to her sophomore season form (when she led the MAC in assist/turnover ratio), then look for her to claim a wide-open point guard spot.
Jamilah Humes
Senior guard
At times last season, the 5-foot-8 guard carried the Flashes on her back. Humes led the team in points, assists, steals and minutes played. If she’s ever injured this year, this team could struggle to fill her position.
Taisja Jones
Senior forward
When Humes wasn’t scoring, Jones was. The JUCO transfer racked up her points in bunches, too. In a stretch of eight games last season, Jones scored 20 or more points six times.
Chenel Harris
Senior forward
Harris has been confusing to watch over the past few years. After a successful freshman campaign, the 5-foot-11 forward has been up and down. She had a quiet 2009-2010 season, tallying just 3.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
Leslie Schaefer
Sophomore center
Last season’s No. 3 center, Schaefer received the starting nod from Kent State coach Bob Lindsay in Friday’s season opener. The 6-foot-3 sophomore saw about only eight minutes of action per a game in her rookie year, so this season could be her chance to show off her ability at the low post.
