BSR Sports Podcast for Nov. 17, 2010

From the Black Squirrel Radio studios on the beautiful campus of Kent State University, I’m Nick Shook. The date is Wednesday, November 17, 2010, and this is your Dash of Sports.

The Kent State men’s basketball team woke up early yesterday morning for some breakfast, and then some nationally televised basketball. The Golden Flashes topped the Robert Morris Colonials, 62-59, in a two-hour battle that began at 8 a.m. With the win, the Flashes improved their overall record to 3-1.

From the collegiate game to the professional ranks…

The Cleveland Cavaliers topped the Philadelphia 76ers 101-93 last night in NBA action at Quicken Loans Arena. Guard Daniel Gibson, who has seen increased action since starting point guard Mo Williams went down with a groin injury, led the team with 18 points. Forwards Jamario Moon and Joey Graham each recorded season highs with 13 points a piece. The Cavaliers improved their record to 5-5.

Keeping it on the hardwood…

Butler’s 2010-2011 Cinderella run ended before it even got started last night, as the 18th-ranked Bulldogs were dominated by the unranked Louisville Cardinals, 88-73. Louisville debuted a brand-new starting five to go along with the debut of their brand new arena, and both were impressive all night against Butler, who could possibly exit the national spotlight after their disappointing loss. The Bulldogs fell to 1-1 overall.

Rounding out today’s action on the gridiron…

The Pittsburgh Steelers cut kicker Jeff Reed yesterday, after Reed missed yet another field goal in Sunday night’s loss to the New England Patriots. Reed, who entered the season as one of the 10 most accurate kickers in NFL history, has missed seven of 22 attempts this season, and was four of nine at the Steelers’ home of Heinz Field. Pittsburgh signed embattled kicker Shaun Suisham, who kicked for the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys last season.
