Phi Sigma Kappa most likely won’t have to move when construction of the PARTA Kent Central Gateway begins, fraternity president Matt Speed said.

When the fraternity’s parking lot was purchased by PARTA to build the transit center, the brothers were expected to relocate if a replacement lot could not be found, PARTA operations manager Bryan Smith said.

Smith said fraternity and sorority houses are considered boarding houses by the city of Kent and must provide one parking space per bed in order to remain in operation.

the fraternity is attempting to buy another house located at 237 E. Main St. between Jimmy Johns and the old Alpha Tau Omega house, Speed said.

If successful, Speed said, the brothers plan to move into both houses and share the parking lot behind Jimmy John’s.

Construction of the Kent Central Gateway was expected to begin in early August, Smith said. The project has been delayed until Car Parts Warehouse at 115 S. Depeyster St. is purchased and torn down.
