Five seniors from Theodore Roosevelt High School were in an SUV that rolled over Wednesday morning at the intersection of Crain Avenue and Lake Street. All five students suffered injuries in the accident.

Two students remained hospitalized as of Thursday afternoon. At approximately 11:15 a.m., the single-car crash occurred while the students were out for a lunch break.

Passenger Zach Marlow was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit at Akron City Hospital. Marlow was pinned beneath the vehicle when it flipped over.

Kent Fire Chief James Williams said Marlow had to be extricated before firefighters could treat him. The crash remains under investigation by the Kent Police Department. It is unknown whether the occupants were wearing seat belts.

Jacob Prunty sustained a fractured vertebra as a result of the crash. Prunty was listed in stable condition at Robinson Memorial Hospital Thursday afternoon. Garrett Byerly, Demitre Jones and Nathaniel Fleck, who suffered less serious injuries, were reportedly released from Robinson Memorial early Wednesday.

“I know the noise of cars crushing because I’ve been here for so long that I know accidents, but it was longer than just a bang…. It was really bad,” said Danita Flannigan, who was at Hutch Pet Shop on Lake Street when the car flipped.

Flannigan said she called the emergency line twice to report the accident.

?Fire units from Brimfield, Ravenna, Ravenna Township and Streetsboro also responded to the scene.
