As the first week of classes came to a close, freshmen got their first taste of the “college experience.” In between making new friends, finding their academic buildings and adjusting to the social dynamic of living with a roommate, students are beginning to get involved in the campus community as university organizations begin their activities for the year.

As part of Welcome Weekend, the students had the opportunity to attend Blastoff: a party of sorts during which groups were invited to set up booths and tables as a means of providing information to new students looking for something to do on campus.

The event allowed freshmen to learn about groups on campus that they may not have even known existed. This was the case for Ciara Robinson, freshman Conservation major, who discovered the Kayaking Club at Blastoff.

“I had no idea we had anything like that!” Robinson said.

Almost everything from activism groups to sororities and fraternities to sports and student media was represented. According to Robinson, however, “A lot of clubs I’d heard about weren’t at Blastoff, so those might be hard to track down.”

Fortunately for new and returning students alike, the Center for Student Involvement can help connect members of the campus community with activities and groups tailored to every interest. CSI’s office is located on the second floor of the Student Center and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
