Pfizer Inc. recalled more than 1 million contraceptives after a packaging error caused an incorrect amount of ingredients in some pills.

Fourteen lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets were voluntarily removed from shelves when the error was discovered, according to a Pfizer press release on Tuesday.

Although there are no immediate health risks, the chances of unintended pregnancy increase due to the incorrect dosage in some of the products.

“An investigation by Pfizer found that some blister packs may contain an inexact count of inert or active ingredient tablets and that the tablets may be out of sequence,” Pfizer said.

Consumers currently taking any of the pills should immediately contact their doctor and return the product to the pharmacy.

Representatives for the Pfizer and the Food and Drug Administration could not be reached for comment.
