Flashes volleyball split its first weekend of Mid-American Conference games

The Kent State Golden Flashes volleyball team split its first two Mid-American Conference games with a tough five-set win over Miami (OH) Friday night, and a three-set loss to Bowling Green Saturday.

The Flashes record goes to 4-10 overall and 1-1 in MAC play. The team’s win at Miami marks the first MAC win in the career of first-year head coach Don Gromala.

Gromala said he knows there’s room for improvement after the first weekend of MAC play.

“Any road win in the MAC is a great win, but we are a little disappointed with how we came out against Bowling Green,” Gromala said. “Our offense never got in a rhythm and that’s something we’ll need if we want to beat the likes of Ohio and Central Michigan.

With conference play in full swing, the Flashes will get a chance to rebound after the loss to Bowling Green with a Thursday night matchup at Ohio.

“I think we just need a solid game on both offense and defense,” Gromala stated. “This past weekend it was one or the other and we have to have solid all-around performances to beat these types of teams,” Gromala added.

Along with the Thursday match at Ohio, the Golden Flashes will play a home weekend Mid-American Conference game against the Chippewas of Central Michigan.

Saturdays match will mark the Flashes first conference game at the M.A.C. Center this season and the first home match since Sept. 8.
