It’s a time when all of the freaks come out to play, and people from all over the world travel to be a part of it. It starts from the moment you see both little children and adults dressed in all kinds of costumes. It is Halloween in New York City.

When I was a little girl, Halloween meant going to school dressed up as Snow White’s evil stepmother each year until I was halfway through high school. I also used to go trick-or-treating with my friends until I turned 18 years old. The only reason I don’t do it now is because I’m not in New York City anymore.

I thought I had gotten a Halloween experience in New York City when I had the opportunity to go to the Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, but I was deeply mistaken.

I really experienced Halloween my first year here in Kent. It is probably one of those nights that will always be engraved in my memory. People start celebrating Halloween the weekend before, going out and partying until the next day. The day I went out, I dressed up as Audrey Hepburn, with a high bun and in a little black dress.

People were dressed in all different types of costumes and ready to party. The SWAT team was out and ready to keep everyone disciplined and have the night go as steadily and easily as possible. The parties were insane, and it was the most fun I have had in a while.

In New York City, the most fun to have would be to go to the parade in the Village. People come from all around the world to march and just be part of the massively fun experience. There is a police presence there to make sure the crowd stays under control and nothing out of line happens.

I would recommend if anyone is in the New York City area around Halloween to definitely try and go to the parade, and if you are in Kent, make sure to go downtown and either participate in the festivities or watch how many people come out for this infamous holiday.

I’m sure Halloween is fun anywhere you go — it just all depends how you like to have fun — but the important thing is to make sure you stay safe. Make sure you go out with someone you can trust, and have cash on you just in case you need to take a cab somewhere or get hungry. Don’t forget, Halloween only comes around once a year, so make the best of it, but do it safely.
