Colleges Against Cancer will host kick-off event for 2013 relay

American Cancer Society Colleges Against Cancer at Kent State University will host an open house 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 306 in the Kent Student Center. The event will provide students with information about the Relay for Life on April 27, 2013, at Kent State.

“This kick-off event is meant to give students a jump start on fundraising for April’s Relay for Life,” said Allison Snyder, senior special education major and the organization’s president. “Participants will have a chance to sign up their teams, learn about the new changes for this year and get ideas to start fundraising.”

Snyder said each Relay for Life team is encouraged to raise at least $100 per team member and have a representative on the track at all times. Relays are an all-night event to signify the concept that cancer never sleeps, Snyder said.

The Relay for Life is an effort of the American Cancer Society that “helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease,” according to the organization’s website.

KSU CAC’s goal for this year is to have 70 teams and raise $79,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“The reason for getting involved in the Relay for Life event is unique and special, just as the story that inspires a person to join,” said Maggie Reinmann, senior educational studies major. “This is a chance to honor the survivors, remember those we have lost to this disease, and increase participation and money to help end cancer forever.”

Currently there are 71 Colleges Against Cancer Chapters in the East Central Division, and more than 467 chapters nationwide.
