The box office was booming over winter break with new releases such as “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Les Misérables” and “Django Unchained.” Nine years ago, Peter Jackson released “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” His latest film made $84.8 million at the box office during its opening weekend.

“It was an incredibly fun movie,” Alex Decker, freshman applied engineering major, said. “Stylistically speaking, it fit well with the rest of the Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. It wasn’t 100 percent faithful to the source material, but it was an excellent film adaption.”

The nation experienced the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history over winter break. Twenty school children and six adults were killed in Newtown, Conn.’s Sandy Hook Elementary Dec. 14. The shooting prompted much discussion over the nation’s gun control policies.

“They shouldn’t punish all gun owners because of a few psychopaths,” Nate Oliver, sophomore exploratory major, said. “People always need something to point their finger at when a tragedy happens. Incidents like this should only encourage more people to buy their own guns so they can protect themselves from all the threats out there.”

Many students prepared — jokingly or not — for the much-discussed apocalypse set to occur Dec. 21. Rather than witnessing the end of the world, those staying in Northeast Ohio over winter break experienced nothing more than a snowstorm.

“As far as the ‘apocalypse’ goes, I heard all types of things as to why it wasn’t going to happen,” Dillon Lloyd, junior justice studies major, said. “One was the Mayans didn’t account for the leap year, so the 12-21-12 should have happened years ago, and that the prediction was a planet was going to collide with us. With all of that being said, I just thought the whole idea was silly.”

Kent State University’s Golden Flashes went 16-9 this year, and the program accepted its first bowl invitation in 40 years. After much success, Darrell Hazell resigned as Kent State’s head football coach.

“I think Coach Hazell did a great job this season,” Josh English, freshman exploratory major, said. “I understand why he would move on to a bigger and better college, but I wish he would have stayed. I don’t know if he will have the success he did at Kent at Purdue because it’s a much bigger pond to swim in now with bigger, faster and more athletic fish to coach against.”

There has been a lot of buzz in the music industry during winter break. Some questionable photos of Justin Bieber suggested he may have been smoking marijuana, Taylor Swift is still sifting through boyfriends and writing songs about them and Kanye West announced Kim Kardashian’s pregnancy.

“I feel like she will do anything for a little more spotlight, but I think they are actually good for each other,” Sam Hewitt, junior marketing and international business major, said. “Their baby is going to be the most spoiled thing ever and the most talked about birth in a while.”
