Bill Clinton made a special appearance to announce the film “Lincoln” at the Golden Globes. Actor Daniel Day-Lewis won a Globe for his role in the movie.
Actress Natalie Wood died mysteriously in 1981, and, as of June 2012, the word “accidental” was removed from her death certificate, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. The case surrounding Wood’s death is ongoing. Her bruised body was found floating in the water off of Catalina Island. Her widower, Robert Wagner, is not a suspect, according to police. At a meeting with staff of the charity Livestrong, cyclist Lance Armstrong gave a tearful apology shortly before going to an interview with Oprah about his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France wins and is banned from competing in further tournaments. The Oprah interview is scheduled to air Jan. 17.
More than 100,000 protesters gathered Jan. 13 in Paris, France to protest the legalization of same-sex marriage. They were also protesting the right to allow gay couples to adopt children. French President Francois Hollande campaigned on the promise that he would extend more rights to gay couples, something that the predominantly Catholic citizens are rallying against.
The White House and Congress continue to battle over the debt ceiling. President Obama held his 17th press conference Jan. 14, in which he addressed the ongoing issues of debt, the economy and job loss. The president said he promised in his campaign to end tax cuts for the wealthy and is sticking with that plan. Read the full story.
