The Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent, 228 Gougler Ave., will be hosting an event honoring Kent artist Robert Wood Sunday Feb. 3 at 3 p.m.

Guest speaker Mara DeMattia, who has been researching Wood for about a year, will present a program called “Investigating the Work of Robert Wood.”

“As I got to know Wood as an artist, I got very interested,” DeMattia said. “To describe his work, it’s so complex it really is an investigation into his life. Everything that you learn is like a string you have to pull out of this game, then there is a knot you have to untie. When you untie the knot, you learn so much about him.”

Robert Wood, who died in February 2012 at the age of 68, received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Kent State University’s art school. His work has been displayed all over Ohio, including the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, the Cleveland State University and galleries in Akron and Kent.

Wood was passionate about sharing his skills at public venues in Kent. He painted regularly at local restaurants and attended many area concerts and art productions.

Before his death, Wood gave back to the Kent community by sharing his expertise in art with students in downtown Kent or on Kent State’s campus.

The event is free and open to the public. It will take place in UUCK’s sanctuary.
