The plant hasn’t produced electricity since January 2012 after a tiny radiation leak led to the discovery of more severe damages. The findings were confirmed Tuesday and environmental activists in California have been pushing to see the plant close permanently.

The three fans who were injured at a NASCAR race Saturday are exploring a possible lawsuit, their attorney, Orlando-based Matt Morgan, said Tuesday. His defense will focus on the safety fence used along the track at Daytona International Speedway. He said he hopes to settle with NASCAR and avoid a lawsuit. The incident injured more than 30 after a wreck sent chunks of debris into the stands.

The Vatican announced Tuesday that Pope Benedict XVI will be known as “emeritus pope” in his retirement. He will still be called “Your Holiness” and continue to wear the traditional white garb associated with the papacy. However, another pope will be selected to replace him soon. Benedict is the first pope to retire in more than 600 years.

Sightseers in a hot air balloon touring the city of Luxor, Egypt died when the balloon caught on fire. Nineteen people were killed in the balloon fire Tuesday. The tourists in the balloon jumped to their deaths, witnesses on the ground said. This accident is considered to be the deadliest involving hot air balloons. A British tourist and the Egyptian pilot, who suffered severe burns, were the only survivors. The balloon was carrying 20 tourists total.
