The brothers of Phi Delta Theta will host Soberfest Thursday, March 7, from 7 to 11 p.m. to raise alcohol awareness on Kent’s campus.

Proceeds originally planned to go toward amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, are now going to a brother in need.

Recently, one of the fraternity’s brothers, Andrew Chewning, senior justice studies major, found out his father was diagnosed with cancer.

Eric Pahls, philanthropy internal chair of Phi Delta Theta and sophomore accounting major, said members then decided to donate all the event’s proceeds to the Chewning family.

Pahls said the fraternity holds the event to promote sobriety and to show having a great time isn’t dependent on alcohol.

Monster Energy is sponsoring Soberfest this year and is donating more than 400 cans of Monster. The Province, Fresco Mexican Bar and Grill, the Music Shoppe and the Cleveland Cavaliers are other sponsors, Pahls said.

Tickets to an Indians game and several baskets will be raffled off at the event, as well as an iPad through Army ROTC.

“I’ve never been more motivated to make an event great,” Pahls said. “This cause hits very close to home, and we want to make this event as amazing as possible for the Chewning family.”

Phi Delta Theta is charging $5 at the door of the Phi Delta Theta house located at 1060 Fraternity Circle for unlimited Monster Energy drink.
