The sequester is impacting people right here on campus.
Kent State is one of several universities across the nation facing cutbacks in the lab. The budget cuts will eliminate 5% of university research dollars.
The National Institutes of Health is a funding agency already facing cutbacks. NIH approved about 17% of grant applications last year, but they expect to only approve about 10% this year.
Satyen Kumar, Associate Vice President for Research at Kent State, said the lack of research may put professors’ chances of tenure in jeopardy. Kumar also says the cuts will affect the classroom because professors use the research results in their teachings.
