Volleyball wins two, drops one at Thunder Invitational

The Kent State volleyball team had its first winning weekend of the season this past weekend after victories over Eastern Kentucky and Southern Illinois at the Thunder Invitational in Huntington W. Va.

The first match for the Flashes (3-6) was a five-set, comeback thriller against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels last Friday that ended in victory (21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-14, 15-8). After dropping the first two sets of the match, the Flashes went on to win the final three, which included a decisive victory in the fourth set.

The squad registered a season-high 70 points, while adding 87 digs throughout the match.

The impressive play carried over into Saturday’s first match for the Flashes, as they defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis in 3 consecutive sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-23). The match saw the Flashes’ offense record 47 kills on their way to a solid victory.

Kent State came up just short of having a perfect weekend after losing Saturday evenings in five sets (20-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-22, 7-15) to the Marshall Thundering Herd, the hosts of the event. The Flashes were only able to post 66 digs in the match.

The Flashes will now prepare to host the Golden Flashes Classic beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and continuing at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the M.A.C. Center.
