Robinson Memorial Hospital in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Agency will hold a medication take-back program Saturday.

The event will be held at the Robinson Medical Arts Building at 6847 N. Chestnut St. in Ravenna.

The program will allow the public to dispose of expired, unwanted or unused medications and other pharmaceutical substances. The drive-up, drop-off event is anonymous, and all medications will be accepted, according to a Robinson Memorial press release.

The hospital will dispose of the medications and recycle the plastic containers they come in.

The hospital also is offering recycling services through Neoshred, a local document-destruction and recycling program.

Neoshred will accept books, cardboard, coated paper, color paper, computer paper, files, magazines, newspapers, phone books, standard white paper and bagged shredded paper, according to the press release.

Andrea Pettit, marketing and public relations coordinator for Robinson Memorial Hospital, said it’s important to get rid of expired or unneeded drugs to help the environment.

“There are harmful effects these drugs can have on the environment,” she said.

She said improper methods of disposal would include flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash.

Pettit said it’s also important to get rid of unneeded drugs so people can stay safe.

“People can have medications that are expired or no longer in use,” she said. “Anything we can do to get these expired or unneeded medications off the streets or out of the cupboards and disposed of safely (is important).”
