A woman tried to run her car through a White House barricade Thursday, then started a car chase toward the Capitol, putting the complex on lockdown temporarily and sending Congress into recess. Police shot and killed the driver; witnesses said they heard between three and five shots. One police officer was hurt in the incident, but his injuries are not life-threatening, officials said. The woman killed in the shooting also had a 2- to 3-year-old child in the car, witnesses said, but the child was uninjured. (read full story)

On the third day of the government shutdown Thursday, President Barack Obama directly blamed House Speaker John Boehner for keeping agencies closed, but Boehner fired back by saying Obama is steamrolling ahead with implementing the Affordable Care Act. The shutdown continued to affect agencies such as the National Transportation Safety Board, whose investigators could not look into a deadly Tennessee bus crash, and the Labor Department, which could not release its September jobs report.

A boat taking African migrants to Italy took on water, caught fire and capsized Thursday near the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing at least 114 people and leaving 200 unaccounted for, Italian officials said. Thousands of people migrate every year from Africa to Italy, hoping to start a better life, but smugglers often charge thousands of dollars for the journey on overcrowded, unsafe boats. Officials said 450 to 500 people were on board, but only 159 were rescued. (read full story)

An Akron man was charged Thursday with murder and domestic violence in the deaths of his wife and 5-year-old son. Tallmadge police arrested 39-year-old Daniel Tighe in the deaths of Wendy Ralston, 31, and their son, Peyton. Tallmadge police said the victims had been dead 18 days before the bodies were found, but decomposition, cleanup and lack of a confession slowed the case.
